This week we had pretty strange homework at English class, the topic of the lesson was emigration and the process of migration of people from country to country.
Our task was to make a list of statements ”Why I could emigrate from my country”, it was October 26, 2 months until I will get 20 years since I am born *(yeah, old Daniel), soon you will see why I reminded you about my birthday, so I started to write on paper, I stopped at point 11, little bit terrified that the list was growing, than I thought, since my country is celebrating 20th Anniversary this year, and me turning 20, I will write TWENTY STATEMENTS on this painful issue.
1. Mentality of a lot of people stuck somewhere between Stalin and Gorbaciov period, let’s call it “Back in URSS”
Consider to listen this song before moving to number 2
2. As individuals, a lot of people can’t realise their ideas because most of the people will come with arguments “Why to not do something” either then to say “Let’s do it together!” or at least “Let’s do it”
No Britney, you wouldn’t “Do it again” in Moldova :)
3. Corruption is everywhere in the system of state, starting in people’s minds and ending in officials pockets!
4. Let’s face it – State is not supporting social vulnerable people *(if you are interested I could give you examples, let me know!)
5. People are trying to discriminate on different issues: nationality, spoken language, social class, way you behave, religion you believe, way you dress etc.
6. There are no Jobs for youth. One of my colleagues mentioned sadly that he is not sure that after he will graduate University he will get a job, and he is paying for his studies.
7. Educational system of Moldova is a printer of templates and not creative individuals, yes we have wonderful teachers and students, but their potential is hidden, somewhere between 6 subjects per day for a 1st year scholar and 10 classes for an University teachers - indeed way to go!
8. Everybody suspects you acting by special “evil” means.
9. Information – which is most powerful tool in different domains, stuck in offices of primary receivers and their relatives.
10. Justice is working for green friends called “Franklin”, “Grant”, “Jackson” on U.S Dollar bills.
11. Political system is blocked due to political imaturity of political actors.
12. EVERYTHING is politicized in Moldova.
13. People are passive in social actions, there are few social initiatives, everybody expects BIG BOSS to solve their problems, which can be President, Prime-minister, mayor, EVERYBODY but not people themselves.
14. Low wages – high prices
15. Everybody waits for BOSS order to act in certain way. Initiative can be punished!
16. Moldova is PAPERCOUNTRY, you need official papers for everything.
17. There is no “collective point” on any issue.
18. There is nothing *(please correct me if it is) that could unite entire society!
19. Moldova is country of wonders where everything is possible, you think it’s impossible COME HERE, you will be impressed!
20. Everybody tends *(even me know, writing down this statements, but just know!) to work hard on the project called “MOLDOVA SUCKS” either on thinking and working on project “MOLDOVA SUCCESSFUL STORY”
Funny or not, but we have a joke related to this topic *(by the way, sense of humour could fill N. 18):
“The last person that will leave Moldova should switch the light off” – very current topic due to economic crisis that world faces!
p.s: Of course I wrote this statements to get against arguments…if they exists :)
Thematic movie!
Indeed true remarks! As I know you Daniel, you are passionated optimist, but is good sometime to get more on land, and start working to get all points fixed up. WELL DONE!

You know that I participated in Youth Understanding Politics in 2009, a year before BFTF. Before YUP I didn’t know Moldova at all. I knew it was a former Sovjet Union country bordering Romania. During YUP, I got to know some people from Moldova. After many talks with some of them, my image of Moldova really changed. And no, not in a positive way. Things I’ve heard there really made me think that Moldova was a backwards country. No offence.
Then, a year later I participated in BFTF and I got to know you. And little by little my opinion about Moldova changed again. The more I got to know you, the more my opinion changed. And this time it actually was in a positive way. Also our YASI participants made this happen. And now I can say that I have actually quite a good image of Moldova. Of course – like all countries – it has its problems that need to be solved.
However, it’s a country that I believe is beautiful (google us, discover us, visit us…:D (or something like that)). It’s a country where I have the impression young people are really engaged in youth work and different kind of activities. It’s a country that is trying really hard to work on their international image by welcoming young people from Europe, the world… (I get almost every day an offer to do an EVS in Moldova :D), and so on…
And now, what do you do? :D You totally burn my good image :D haha. Now I will never visit you in Moldova :D
No, but let’s be honest. I do believe you are right with some of your points and I truly do believe that you definitely don’t have the same average ‘wealth’ like Belgium for example (at least you have a government:p) . But others, are just a problem of all countries and citizens nowadays. The fact that everything is getting bureaucratic, is a problem we all have. The fact that people don’t act anymore, is a problem that all people who are actually engaged, face. The fact that people don’t feel united anymore, is a more than accurate problem.
But next to all that… there’s one thing that will unite us all and always. Everyone wants to improve and the grass is greener at the other side. But home sweet home is also not so bad :)
Posted by sarahsbreakaway | 3 November 2011, 22:11My dear Sarah!
I can’t believe that you wrote entire essay here :) just love you for being as you are all the time :)
While I was reading what you wrote, I was remembering awesome moments trying to convince you that MOLDOVA is Center of Universe (by the way it IS!), and your sceptical YEAHH, SURE :D :D but know we have vice versa effect HOOORAY!
You are absolutely right when you say that majority of the problems are similar for the countries, (I will tell you a secret, I get inspiration from Greece while I was making this list, don’t tell Efthymios!) and for sure “Everyone wants to improve and the grass is greener at the other side. But home sweet home is also not so bad”, for me was essential to post this article, mainly for last point:
20. Everybody tends *(even me know, writing down this statements, but just know!) to work hard on the project called
“MOLDOVA SUCKS”either on thinking and working on project “MOLDOVA SUCCESSFUL STORY”It’s important to get sometimes COLD SHOWER in order to understand that we should act in proper way in order to accomplish achievements!
Thank you for spending your time and reading this post, I appreciate you my favourite Belgian choco bon lady :)
Warm regards from wonderful Moldova :)

Posted by Vodă Daniel | 3 November 2011, 22:43It’s just about fact that here we are fighting to survive. we exist. that’s all. no one will pay us if we do anything, unless we know someone who knows the one whom is supposed to pay. ugly truth, but here, i am quiet sure that i have no future, because all of them will try to stop me, if i’ll do what i’ll want. ( sorry for any grammar mistakes)

You are right in your way, but you should consider the fact that the change is in our hands :)
By one the system cannot be defeat, but if we join our forces together we can get a good result!
I wrote these post as a reminder for people, COMMON stop being sleepy, get destiny in your hands, we can change the things, we can make this country successful, the ingredient is simple: We should be united!!
Posted by Vodă Daniel | 3 November 2011, 22:59All in all it’s about money isn’t it? but it is fact that you won’t be likely to get money if you go somewhere else that easy either. Life in E.Europe generally sucks, I would agree on most of your points even though they are enlarging my agony. greetz from not so cool Bosnia :)
